
Unit 6 - El mercado
About the unit
Food and shopping are the main elements in unit six, which for the children means cooking a typical Spanish dish, using potato stamps, and buying fruit in an improvised shop. Among the key language practised in this unit: food vocabulary; colours; the verb ‘have’; and counting. Meanwhile, the familiar What's in the bag? game is put to music.
Expectations
At the end of this unit, most children will:
- show confidence using forms of the verb tener (have)
- recognise and say most presented fruit and vegetable words
- count items with confidence
- comfortably express politeness
- create question forms using given language
Some children will not have made so much progress and will:
- recognise forms of the verb tener (have)
- show some confidence in a role play situation
- recognise and say all numbers between 1-20
- recognise most presented fruit and vegetable words
- say some presented fruit and vegetable words
- recognise and say several colours
- count some items
- express some forms of politeness
Some children will have progressed further and will:
- show confident use of language in a role play situation
- grasp the language used in the market scene

Notes
Point out to the children that the word Más has an accent on it. Accents in Spanish can be used to distinguish one word from another with the same spelling.

Accents on Spanish words also show which part of the word should be stressed when spoken. Here are some examples we have seen in previous units:
Miércoles (Wednesday) – When you say this word you emphasise the first ‘e’. 
Aquí está (Here it / she / he is) – Emphasis on the ‘i’ in Aquí and on the ‘a’ in está.
