
Unit 4 - El zoo
About the unit
A visit to the zoo is the setting for unit four, and new vocabulary centres around types of animals. Much of the language used has already been introduced in previous units, so with some subtle variations in the presented language (such as ‘How big!’ rather than ‘Very big’) the children should find unit four quite straightforward to grasp. Besides, the format of the DVD episodes – and its regular, predictable pattern - will be very familiar to the children now.
Expectations
At the end of this unit, most children will:
- recognise and be able to say several animal types
- be able to repeat specific phrases after Speekee
- know the names of all the characters in Speekee
- be able to describe animals as big or small
- recognise expressions for hungry and thirsty
- recognise how to express like
- recognise how to ask what something is
- be able to count things
Some children will not have made so much progress and will:
- know the names of most of the characters in Speekee
- recognise some animal types
- recognise the adjectives for big and small
- match animal sounds to pictures
Some children will have progressed further and will:
- be able to repeat after Speekee without prompting
- recognise and be able to say nine animal types
- be able to use expressions for hungry and thirsty
- be able to say they like something
- be able to say their favourite colour
- be able to ask what something is
