Semana Santa (Holy Week)

A focal point for Holy Week is Andalusia, in the south of Spain, where processions organised by the various brotherhoods in each town take place on a daily basis. They can be drawn out affairs - in Arcos de la Frontera, where much of Speekee was filmed, there is one which begins at 2am and ends at 4pm! The processions are solemn, and the heavy statues are carefully maneuvered around by a team of carriers - often barefoot, and never able to see where they are going - whose leader out front guides them in the right direction.
