The Homeschooler’s Speekee Adventure – 18

Week 18

This week we are still visiting an authentic Spanish classroom.  We worked on “Who is it?” and “It is…”, also “Who are they?” and “They are…”  This activity uses a cute worksheet in which the Speekee actors’ faces are blurred out a little and your child guesses who they are.  I thought this was a neat idea.  We also watched a Dino and Lupi sketch a few times, before muting it and attempting to speak the dialogue on our own.  My favorite phrase is “Te quiero (I love you)”.  My 3 year old has so much fun watching the Speekee videos.  My 10 year old enjoys the extra activities, like acting out various scenes and dialogues.

Week 17

This week we started the lessons on “La Clase”.  We watched the video and enjoyed seeing inside a Spanish classroom.  We drilled on introducing ourselves with either “I am …” or “My name is …”.  We also practiced handing each other items while taking turns with “Toma”, “Gracias”, and “De Nada”.  My 3 year old preferred to watch the short clip and say the phrases along with the Speekee children.  This week’s lesson also includes a short song to introduce us to several prepositions and school supply terms.  We all found ourselves singing along with the captions turned on.

Week 16

This was our last week at “El Zoo”. We spent it reviewing our animal names. It was also time to add in “I’m hungry” and “I’m thirsty”. While we were at it, we added in review of some our favorites . . . hot/cold, happy/sad, favorite colors, etc. I’m happy with my daughters’ progress. Even my 3 year old is memorizing some of the words.

Week 15

This week we are still visiting the zoo, with all of its wild and crazy animals.  We have spent huge chunks of time reviewing animal names, terms for “look”/“listen” and “big”/ “small”, even how to tell someone our favorite color.  It has been a productive week at the zoo.

Going great.

Week 14

We spent another week visiting the zoo and all of the animals inside.  My daughter watched the video of “El Zoo” again.  And we also spent a good bit of time reviewing animal names and sizes (big, small) and counting.  You can see one of the worksheets in the included photograph below.  My 3 year old has “big” and “small” memorized and will describe random objects in the house as one or the other.

Week 13

It was finally time to watch the video that my 3yo daughter has been waiting on. She has waited and waited for the week when we would finally be able to watch the “El Zoo” episode.  She loves animals, all kinds, and this was probably her favorite episode.

During drill time, we printed out the zoo animal worksheet on the Speekee website. I would say the animal names in Spanish in random order, asking my 10 year old what the English names were.  Then I would say the names in English and let her say them in Spanish.  We appreciated that most of the animal names were very similar in both languages, such as “elephant” and “un elefante”.

Week 12

Another week finds us reviewing and drilling facts from the La Casa episode.  Numbers up to 20; we threw in numbers up to 30, using a catchy song that we found.  Speaking of songs, they are one of the things we enjoy about Speekee.  The songs make learning easier and more fun.

Watch a Speekee song on YouTube here

We also worked on learning the names for basic clothing items.  This was harder and will require more work.  But we are working on it, using the Speekee-provided worksheet and random drilling exercises.

Have a great week,

Week 11

This week we continued on with the lesson about the home.  We spent time learning the names for immediate family members.  My 9 year old enjoyed introducing each of us. We also worked on the days of the week.  It was interesting to learn that in the Spanish culture, the days of the week start with Monday.  We had some trouble getting the hang of the days’ names.  So we decided to put it into the same song that we used to learn the days of the week when my children were younger.  This helped a lot.  Speaking of songs, my 3 year old really enjoys the Speekee intro song.  When she hears it start, she comes running from the other room.

The Homeschooler’s Speekee Adventure – 10

Week 10 was a fun week.  We watched the video La Casa once again.  I liked
this one, as it focused on the home and words that we use on a regular
basis, such as toys and clothing.  We spent some time mastering “Grande, Muy
Grande, Pequeña, Muy Pequeña”.  We watched the video clip, filled out the
worksheet, and would drill at convenient times throughout the week.

Out of the blue, I would hold my hands far apart and say “Grande”, then I would
hold them farther apart and say “Muy Grande”.  By the end of the week, our 3
year old was doing this as well and thinking it was great fun.  I continue
to review terms from previous weeks to help keep them fresh in my daughters’
thoughts.  Again, out of the blue, I might start shivering and say “Frío” or
I might frown and say “Triste”.  I am finding the program to be flexible and
fun.

The Homeschooler’s Speekee Adventure – 9

Week 9 introduced us to the video, “La Casa”.  I enjoyed this one a lot; it was really cute.  The best part was learning the names of some common toys: doll, teddy bear, ball, piano, and blackboard.  Some were really easy to learn: “a piano” is “un piano”.  Some were much more difficult: “a doll” is “una muñeca”.

"Mi muñeca" - My doll

We had to listen to the pronunciation over and over, trying to get the hang of it.

Rolling our “R”s was a rather new experience, which had all of us laughing at ourselves.

Learning a new language can be quite an adventure.

Have a great week,

Kimberly
